Herb Kelleher, the wise-cracking, chain-smoking, Wild Turkey drinking founder of Southwest Airlines, passed away today at 88. May his bags fly free, the no smoking sign be perpetually extinguished, and the drink coupons never expire.

RIP. He and his team did a lot to change the way we travel by air - generally for the better.
And it’s amazing that he made it to 88 with some of his habits.

We need to find out what the hell the livers of guys like Lemmy and Kelleher were made out of and sell it in pill form. Or liquor form.

Funny you mention the “no smoking sign extinguished”. I could never imagine flying on an airplane with people smoking, that sounds like the worst possible experience imagineable. Smoking in any enclosed space seems insane to me and also makes me super happy to never have been of age to walk into a bar when smoking was still allowed there.

It was... not pleasant. They did cycle the air a lot more, and I think everyone was a bit more nose blind
to the smoke smell, but it was noticeable.

It was. But as bad as it was on a plane, imagine how it was on a bus, where the air wasn’t constantly cycled through the cabin.
